The Victorians and Folklore

Catherine Robson

Molly Hillard

In addition to the novels Jane Eyre and Great Expectations, we'll read the works of numerous poets (including Christina Rossetti, Matthew Arnold, Robert Browning, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning) and prose writers (including Carlyle and Ruskin, and folklorists from both the 19th and 20th centuries). The course will also focus in part on pre-Raphaelite art and Victorian photography (see below). By examining this wide range of representative forms, the course will trace the development of a number of key themes in 19th-century British culture with particular attention to the contributory role of folklore.

Grading: Two midterms (25%); one five-to-seven-page paper (20%); final (25%); group presentations (20%); attendance and participation (10%).

Texts: The Norton Anthology of English Literature, Vol. 2, seventh edition; Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte; Great Expectations, Charles Dickens; A course reader of photocopied material available from Classical Notes.
