How to Use Remote Desktop

MAC COMPUTER CLASSROOMS

The Mac computer classrooms now use Apple Remote Desktop 3. Ask me or a computer lab attendant for the password.

CLM provides documentation for the previous version of Apple Remote Desktop, reviewing its four main functions: lock, observe, control, and share. The differences between ARD 2 and ARD 3 are fairly minimal:

    • ARD 3 no longer has an Unlock button in the top menu. Instead, you must click on Lock and then toggle from Lock to Unlock.
    • ARD 3 includes a History of previous actions in the left column. If you lock all the computers in the classroom, then unlock later, you can quickly lock or unlock them again by clicking on either item in the History list.
    • The keychain function of the password box of ARD 3 is active. You need to type in the password only at the beginning of a session. If you close ARD 3 and then open it later during the class, it will remember that you already entered the password once.
    • When you use the Control function, students can still control their computers so long as you are not actively controlling them.
    • ARD 3 offers a new function: Veil. Clicking on the Veil button allows you to lock a student computer from the student's point of view, while taking control of it on your end to close programs, make changes to files, and so on.

PC COMPUTER CLASSROOMS

AB Tutor Control, the PC equivalent to Apple Remote Desktop, has been installed in all PC classrooms (73/93 Hutchison, 1131 Meyer, and 2020 SLB). Documentation for the program is available via the “Teaching in a Computer Classroom” section of the CLM website.
