Recently the University has mandated that we use only secure FTP Clients, or SFTPs. For more information on the reasons for the change, visit http://security.ucdavis.edu/telnet_ftp.cfm. In the past, PC users have connected through SmartFTP. Unfortunately, this client is no longer secure, so as a PC user you'll need to switch to WinSCP. For Mac users, I have included instructions below on using Fugu, although recently Fetch 5.0, which offers SFTP, has also become available for download via the Software section of MyUCDavis.
Mac Users
Fetch 5.2. You can download Fetch for free through MyUCDavis. In the tabs along the top of the page, click on "UCD Resources," and to the far left, "Software." At the left of the next page, click on the folder titled "Internet Tools." Fetch 5.2 should appear in the list; click on the name, and in the page that follows, "Download."
You setting up Fetch, remember to check “SFTP” at the outset. Also, you will need to copy the username and serial code from the software site to register Fetch the first time you open it. (I will post instructions on installing and using Fetch 5.0 sometime this quarter. In the meantime, please contact me with questions.) You can download Fetch 5.0 via the Software section of MyUCDavis.
Note: Upgrades to the Olson server last year caused a security problem for some Mac-users trying to connect remotely to the computer labs from home or the office with Fetch. If Fetch refuses to connect to the labs for you, and a warning is displayed regarding the Host, our computer lab contact suggests you delete the known_hosts file in your home directory:
1) On the Mac, go to the Finder and from the "Go" menu select "Go to Folder". In the prompt type ~/.ssh/
2) The .ssh directory will open at this point. You need to delete the known_hosts file.
3) After the file has been deleted, try to connect to the Olson Class Folders. A warning may be displayed, but just select OK.
Fugu. If you use a Mac in your office and would like to connect remotely to your computer classroom in Olson or Hart Hall using Fugu, click here for web instructions, or download a Word document explaining the process. Fugu is also available for free download through MyUCDavis. Follow the instructions above for locating Fetch; a bit further down the page of free software you'll see Fugu listed.
PC Users
WinSCP. If you use a PC in your office and would like to connect remotely to your computer classroom in Olson or Hart Hall using WinSCP, click here for web instructions, or download a Word document explaining the process.
An Important Note on Connecting Remotely
In the past, the address for the servers in Olson was lm-ol2.ucdavis.edu. Since that address sometimes caused confusion, our
Olson Computer Lab Manager created a new shortcut address,
olson.ucdavis.edu. As usual, please
remember not to type an @ before "ucdavis.edu" but a dot instead. Both addresses will connect you to the Olson server. Using the new address for the first time, you might see a warning popup about certificate authentication, but click OK and you should connect.
